bird bath fountain made from upright boulder and two stone slabs

People also asked me about my bird baths–why don’t I make those as fountains?

And of course, I’m willing to, but then I want to make it interesting for myself.

Here we took 3 stones and have connected them to fit, without the need of any hidden rod, cement or epoxy. The two tiers create a pleasant cascade, and will surely delight many a song bird.

Today, we’re taking the world’s first peak…at the two-tiered natural stone bird bath fountain:

One of the most common responses I get, to my sculpture work–is, “you should make one as a fountain/do you ever make fountains”.

But for pieces such as my spheres, I’m usually thinking, Sure, we could make it a fountain. But the course work should be fluid enough, that actual water moving may not be necessary. Well, I’ll be unveiling another, this one shaped like a vase, rather soon just the same.

This piece feels complete, as is, no water needed.

I usually don’t share a work in progress like this…

But then I like the way it looks, part buried in snow.

The plan was to finish this piece today, but snow last night changed that plan. But if it weren’t for the snow, I wouldn’t have gotten any decent photos or video of the stone bird bath fountain. Sure, it was finished weeks ago–but it’s in my outdoor studio, surrounded by stones, rocks–pretty well organized, mind you. But it still would clutter up the video. Thus, a 4 inch blanked of snow made today’s post possible!Otherwise, I’d have had to wait until this piece is installed in a lovely garden in Delaware, in a month or two.

Next Month (April)

  • photos of the Llano Earth Art Fest
  • a tutorial on how to make water glass paint–all natural paint made from Sand and Wood Ash plus crushed stone as pigment!
  • additional photos and video of the stone bird bath fountain
  • –and bigger things still, planned for May. Be there!
