The walkway featured above is made from large (and thick) slabs of Pennsylvania bluestone. Here, I was convinced to try using river rocks as a joint filling material–instead of my usual stone dust method. River rocks tend to kick out of flagstone joints, and get everywhere–like dangerous and annoying ball-bearings all of your flagstones. To avoid that sort of situation, larger river rocks were used–like 1.5″ to 2″ pieces. As such, the joints here are a bit wider than my usual tight-fit. In order to keep the flagstones stable over the long-term in such a situation–larger (and thicker) flagstones were used.
