Stone Memorial Bench
I recently had the opportunity to create a Stone Memorial Bench at a public park in Chester County. Burgess Park, in Glenmoore, alongside the Brandywine Creek.
Two stone planters are included as part of the memorial. These two planters are both small sandstone boulders, with an eight inch diameter hole drilled in each, making them into flower pots. The holes are drilled all the way through the stone. As such, whatever is planted within these boulders will likely one day root itself down into the earth.
I’ve had this idea for a simple stone planter for some time now. Mainly, the notion comes to me when someone asks me about my stacked stone vases. As part of this memorial, these simple planters fit in well as they retain their natural shape, the only alteration of the stone being the hole drilled through. This is like the bench itself, in which the upright boulders have maintained their original shape and character, the only significant change being the notches cut into their sides, to allow for the setting of the seating platform.
Thank you
Your work is gorgeous.
I love the idea of drilling a hole thru stones for planters. What type of tool did you use? This idea is one I want to use in my backyard.
Thank you for your work.
Thank you. I had the quarry bore the stone planters out for me. Apparently they used a water jet.
