I made boulder benches and bird baths last week

notch detail

New benches, delivered and installed to my customer’s location in New Jersey.

So, what makes my benches “bolder” than others, anyway? Why, it’s just the confidence that can only come from knowing that you have one (or possibly two) finely cut notch, a cut above the rest. Top-notch.

Here’s a video, showing a bit of my process:

The wrap-around notch.

I came up with this design, for the notched boulder benches, in 2010. In 2012 I came up with the short leg version. Every year, I find a way to do one a bit different, than before. This wrap around notch, for example. I’ve been making bird baths for just about as long–and likewise, still coming up with new variations. People see my work and say, “oh, I’ll try to copy that”. And I wish you luck! But just copying my designs isn’t enough. You need 2 things: 1) you need to sharpen you stone skills. That just takes decades of diligent study and practice. 2) you need to develop an eye for form and beauty.

Another short video, shows off them notches, and stairs:

boulder bird bath

Two-level bird bath, carved from granite. A small set of stairs connects the deep pool area with the lower patio/kiddy pool. Created at my workshop in PA and delivered to a customer in Maryland, just yesterday. By the way–on the day I made this, I had the carving about 99 percent done, and the I rinsed off the dust and quit work for the day. The next morning, I was walking over to my carving area, to put the final touches on the piece–and I caught a bird hopping out of the lower basin /the “kiddy pool”. Before the piece was even finished!
