email devin@devineescapes to commission. Seating platform is natural stone, with irregular and varying width, not perfectly sawed and polished to precise thickness. Each bench you see here was hand-made by a dedicated artisan with no cookie cutters in his tool box.
These benches are enjoyable to look at, I hope, but moreover they are healthy too. The natural character of the boulders have been preserved and in this case, that’s where the art comes in. My greatest endeavor here is to do as little as possible, therefore a lot of the work that I do, in bench-making, is looking and observing. My job is to find the “right” stones, from a given source, and then figure out how to best stand them up, turn them with best face forward and make any minor adjustments unnoticeable.
I stand resolute with a firm conviction that these benches and likewise my birdbaths which can be seen here, are good for your health and happiness.

Pocono pink boulders, with white quartz river pebble inclusions. The boulder on the right side was already shaped like that–we just have to square off the natural ledge just a little bit, to make the seating platform sit nicely.
Pocono pink boulders are some sort of metamorphic sand stone with all these white quartz river rocks embedded in there. Wild harvested boulders from a private residence on the side of a mountain…Millions of years are written upon the faces of these stones, each crag tells part of the story. My job here is to do as little as possible, to preserve as much of the natural beauty and soul, as possible.

Recently delivered, to Wayne Pennsylvania. Cragged and mossy boulders, double notched bench. 4.5′ long seating platform.

This memorial bench is set with a bronze plaque and placed at a beloved fishing spot, next to an old covered bridge.
Pink limestone. You know I had to barter, with the old man on the silver mountain to attain these fine stones, right? I’ll post a video to my youtube later on today, telling that story.

Notched boulder Benches
The first notched benches. These ones are large. Instead of cutting off the bottom of the benches, I actually buried them into the ground. A few years later, I began cutting the bottoms of the upright boulders flat, so that they could be made portable.
These boulder benches are hand-made, from irregular boulders and thick slabs of flagstone. Rustic, sturdy and unique.

Original design 2010. My benches are large and sturdy, all natural stone surfaces…nothing polished or too perfect/fabricated.

Memorial Benches
Memorial bench at Burgess Park in Glenmoore Pennsylvania. Within the acoustic guitar shaped engraving is a reproduction of someone whose music brought joy into the world.

This stone bench here is a variation on the concept above. The one stone has the notch carved into it, the other boulder one has a flat top. Kind of a semi-off-kilter, quirky or modern take on a simple and rustic concept. Originally design first conceived in 2011. There may be a knock-off or 2 out there
