Flowing stone art by Devin Devine
For the past decade or so I’ve been developing this technique. The idea struck me a long time ago: what if we could make stone mosaics as elaborate as the pebble mosaics we see–yet, without using cement? I didn’t know how long it would take, or how to physically accomplish the work. Additionally, there were also questions and concerns about longevity and maintenance.
So, I started doing these types of garden mosaic in simpler form, at first
Only getting more complicated, after some practice–and years of observation, of which methods work best:
This is how my mind works: I like flowing and swirling forms and colorful movement. I also like work that is environmentally sustainable, and I like old school traditional craftsmanship. I see these pebble mosaics, and garden mosaic paths mades with pebbles–and cement. The cement sort of diminishes it, for me. No offense intended! My most recent garden mosaic is actually at the foot of a “not dry stone” sculpture that I made a few years ago. I understand that the cement used in the creation of this stone tentacle may diminish it for some people. But then again–the sphere below is more elaborate that the tentacle–and there are multiple videos on my youtube channel demonstrating that the sphere is indeed dry stone.

We’ve done walls, spheres and other 3-dimensional garden mosaic forms, and flat work such as patios and walkways.
Last year, I was quite happy to manifest a sphere which was executed at the height of my ability. I don’t think there’s much way that I could have done much better.
