Yesterday we completed this memorial cairn for cancer victims and their families.

Survivors will be able to write the name of their departed loved one upon a river rock and place it unto the cairn. I hope it can provide them some comfort. And strength. Commissioned by EMD Serono and installed at their location at Boston Seaport.

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. – Thomas Campbell

In the words of EMD this rock art was commissioned to:

“represent our journey and commitment to stay true to our purpose for patients living with cancer, multiple sclerosis and other serious diseases”.

I am deeply honored that they chose my work to serve this purpose.

I built this memorial cairn from stone harvested within a couple miles of my house. One day I was driving past a construction site and I saw the excavator pulling these large, red, flat (and BEAUTIFUL) stones out of the ground. Thereupon I hit the brakes and turned around, of course. Joe, the excavator, was happy to load my truck. Thanks Joe! These stones were actually part of a 9′ tall cairn that stood at my house. It stood for 4 years, through all seasons, just stone.

The committee in charge of commissioning the memorial cairn liked the 9′ one so much that I decided to take it apart and create their 4′ tall cairn from it.

I call this stone Blakeslee Sandstone. It’s a rather hard sandstone, containing much iron. The red/pink color is common among stones in the Pocono region. Some of my benches, bird baths and etc are made from stones like this, and from conglomerate stones–which look like Blakeslee Sandstone, but with white quartz inclusions.

I used basalt dowels and wooden pegs (natural materials) to make the piece into a safe and permanent indoor installation.

Thank you for looking
