Artistic Flagstone Patios in Devon
So, a few years back I was laying a lot of flagstone. I’m looking at the work that I’m doing and I’m thinking….when you look at it, this is not so different from laying tile. You see all sorts of patterns in tile work, and all different types of mosaic stuff. People don’t really do that so much with flagstone….Especially in dry laid applications.

Well, it’s understandable–flagstone is big and heavy. It’s a lot of work getting big pieces like this level–especially if you are laying them dry, in a bed of stone dust. Getting them puzzled together is challenging and time consuming too–especially if you are using irregular natural stone. Who would want to make such time consuming work take even longer?

Now I’d been kicking around these ideas for awhile, experimented a bit over the years with the concept. How to incorporate different inlays into dry laid flagstone work? The two photos above are both from jobs done within the past year…it’s really only been the past year or so that I’ve hit upon a formula that works we–, where the mosaic elements stand out enough, are fit together neatly, and everything of course stands nice and sturdy, no wobbly stones or anything.

Of course there is always artistry–or the potential for artistry anyway, in any landscape design project. Combining elements into a pleasing and functional composition that works well for it’s space…..
And that’s cool–but I’ve already built a lot of those types of patios in Devon and elsewhere. I’ve got a mind full of concepts, all sorts of inlay and mosaic concepts that I want to unleash. The best projects of course always contain multiple elements–walls, steps, patio, walkway–when I’m building a full hardscape, with multiple elements, we have the opportunity to really explore a concept and create a unified expression upon your piece of land.

Dry Stone Sphere, private residence in Devon PA. After I build a flagstone patio, I like to do something creative with the small, leftover scrap pieces of flagstone, the pieces too small to be used as patio stone. This dry stone sculpture happened like that, in the summer of 2013 in Devon.
Stay tooned in 2015. Now that I’ve got my technique down, we can expect some groovetastic flagstoning to happen in Devon this coming year. And check out some artistic dry stone walls too!
